eARThHAMPTONS 2018

eARThHAMPTONS 2018, an Earth Day Friendly ART & DESIGN organized by Anahi DeCanio – A Weekend Celebration at historic Ashawagh Hall, will be held the weekend of April 21st through the 22nd.

In 2018, eARThHAMPTONS will feature a strong showcase of exhibiting award winning artists, design elements, and the participation of local farms and purveyors. The event will include additional programming of interest to a wide audience. We have new elements and a few surprises in store for our audience.  We compliment other wonderful events and scientific presentations on the East End highlighting the importance of preserving the natural beauty around us. eARThHamptons focuses on the concept that our immediate environs and what makes up “home and habitat” can be beautiful while still honoring sustainable practices.  The work of artists, designers, architects, landscapers, and builders combined to make healthier beautiful environments is a natural fit based on common ground. Anahi, who is also an agent with Douglas Elliman, is pursuing green certification to work with clients searching for those features in their homes.2018 - earthhamptons ANAHI DECANIO EARTH DAY HAMPTONS ANAHI DECANIO
“We have been so fortunate to have a wonderful attendance and a growing following every year.  Our 2017 Saturday evening reception brought over 300 guests. We continue to look forward to growing an enjoyable way to combine all the elements that make up our habitats at large and bring more attention to sustainable practices in the art and design world as well as our everyday lives” comments DeCanio who has deep ties to the natural beauty found on the East End.
This year’s roster of artists brings a mix of eclectic styles and genres that range from sculpture, fine art abstracts and photography, to contemporary art.  eARThHAMPTONS 2018 includes the work of sought after Springs glass artist Mary Milne, photographer Donna Renna, internationally renowned sculptor Phyllis Hammond, Dan’s cover local artist Aurelio Torres, ceramic artist and designer Anna Clejan and award winning Anahi DeCanio.
This year’s event is once again being graced with the participation of master craftsman and fine custom furniture designer Angel Naula. Naula Workshop has collaborated with acclaimed interior designers and architects and has completed high-profile residential projects for Robert Kennedy Jr., Hugh Jackman, Norah Jones, and Rupert Murdoch, among others. Additionally, Naula created custom made pieces for the penthouse exquisitely designed by Kelly Behun at architect Rafael Viñoly’s 432 Park Avenue, eventually sold by Douglas Elliman.  Complimenting the design elements in the show, Cloud9 Designs will be displaying an exclusive line of luxury home accessories.  Anna Clejan will be featuring pieces from her collection of fine art ceramics.

Pop Up Abstract Art Show Returning To The Hamptons Over Columbus Day Weekend

Over Columbus Day weekend, you can celebrate the East End’s legendary art history as you admire works featured in Mostly Abstract V at Ashawagh Hall in East Hampton, a venue that has shown masterpieces by Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock.

“In keeping with the rich and storied tradition of abstract expressionist exhibitions at Ashawagh Hall, a diverse group of artists will present Mostly Abstract V,” Beth Barry, who is included in the show, shared. “These artists create work that is a visceral and emotional response to the world, not a literal one.”

Mostly Abstract V will highlight pieces from Beth Barry, Barbara BilottaAnahi DeCanio, Anna Franklin, Mary Milne, Katherine Hammond, Bo Parsons, Sheila Rotner, Lieve Theirs, and Mark Zimmerman.

“My work continues to shift to reflect a freer ‘unedited’ style,” DeCanio shared. “The layers are all still there but the textures and texts that might have been hidden in the past have become more apparent and form an integral part of the visible final image. I’m allowing the viewer to come into an intimate space not shared before. It’s been a bit of a challenging journey but very exciting.”

The pop up art show will be on display on Saturday, October 7 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday, October 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday, October 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. An opening reception will be held on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

“The paintings and sculptures are an external expression of an internal, intuitive process,” added Barry.

Admission to Mostly Abstract V is free.

Ashawagh Hall is located at 780 Springs Fireplace Road in East Hampton.

Zacharias’ work will be on exhibit as a special feature at the event.  His paintings can be found in important collections including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Museum of Art in Providence, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.

The report is the industry’s leading publication on global prime property markets, wealth distribution and luxury trends.  The panel of experts discuss trends in art collecting, classic cars, and wine markets as well as real estate. The Wealth Report offers invaluable insight into global trends and what will impact personal assets in the years to come.

After the broadcast, a chat will be led by Dawn Watson, creator of Hamptons Party Girl and public relations manager for Douglas Elliman for the Hamptons and Long Island.  Anahi DeCanio has recently joined the Douglas Elliman team combining her Wall St. background and the same matchmaking and marketing skills she uses to put together eARThHAMPTONS to work with clients in the world of real estate.

ADDITIONAL INFO on ARTISTS and PARTICIPANTS:

ANAHI  DECANIO

Anahi is an Uruguayan born NY artist who is deeply influenced by her surroundings, whether nature or the energy and patina on an urban wall.  Art imitating life, Ms. DeCanio’s work is characterized by a myriad of layers that reveal themselves with a bold voice or subtle whispers creating striking abstracts that are rich in texture and meaning.  Her life experience is as eclectic as her work.  With a Wall Street background and a life-long love of art and design, Anahi has recently joined the Douglas Elliman team as a perfect place to combine all those elements.

NAULA

Born in Cuenca, Ecuador, Angel Naula has spent nearly his entire life designing and fabricating custom furniture, apprenticing in his family’s own workshop until the age of six and building his first piece of furniture when he was just 13. Upon immigrating to the United States, Angel carried on the integrity, mastery, and craftsmanship instilled by his father, his grandfather, and the generations of furniture makers before them.

In 2002, Angel opened Naula Workshop and has since collaborated with such acclaimed interior designers and architects as Robin Wilson, Jamie Drake, Kelly Behun, Philip Gorrivan, and Mark Zeff. He has completed high-profile residential projects for Robert Kennedy Jr., Hugh Jackman, Norah Jones, and Rupert Murdoch, as well as commercial projects for Columbia Pictures, Mandarin Oriental NY, LaGuardia Airport, and various celebrated restaurants. His work has also been featured in such notable venues as Esquire SoHo, Pulse Contemporary Art, Maison de Luxe Beverly Hills, Elle Décor, The New York Times, and the Hampton Designer Showhouse.

WILLIAM RIS GALLERY

Mary Cantone recently opened William Ris East in Jamesport, New York on Long Island’s North Shore to continue the traditions of 50 year old William Ris Gallery in Stone Harbor.  Mary’s career in designing interiors and space planning has included collaborating with artists and encouraging clients to enhance, with passion, the fine arts. A bonus to Cantone’s innate and nurtured abilities is her keen sensibilities for mixing mediums, styles and colors.  The gallery has been received to great success and has a major contributor to the arts in the East End.  William Ris is located on Main Road, in Jamesport, NY – adjacent to the Sherwood House Vineyards Tasting Room.

PETER GUMPEL

Peter is a trained architect fascinated by light, shadow and perspective and the resulting volumetric impact of the subject.  As a figurative water-colorist, he uses his medium to record what he sees going beyond simple documentation.  He uses factual rendition as a stimulus to create images that capture the essence of the scene or person.  Mr. Gumpel is currently serving as president of the Artists Alliance of East Hampton

PHYLLIS CHILLINGWORTH

Phyllis expresses her “love of Earth” in a group of oil paintings that capture the diverse energy

she experienced in Nova Scotia, Montana, Provence and in Montauk.  Phyllis paints both plein air

and from memory; her studio is in Montauk, NY.  The show will include elusive ocean watercolors

painted in Montauk. Phyllis is a graduate of The Institute of Design, IIT, Chicago and The School

of Art & Architecture, Yale. She has had three solo shows at Atlantic Gallery, NYC.

LORI HOROWITZ

Her “Nurture series” of papier mache sculptures, depict individuals in society and their interactions. “I seem to become somehow bonded to these individuals carefully exploring and interpreting their attitudes. Often unseen and unheard, we all contribute and make up this diverse and multi-faceted population. I appreciate the complexity of each piece, collapsing three dimensional pieces into 2 and 3-dimensional space.  I love the process of combining photography, wire, papier mache and painting. This innovative, figurative analysis is a socio/ psycho study created to bring light to the attention seekers and the overlooked of our society.”

CYNTHIA SOBEL

I strive to give my paintings the fluidity of water so that the colors move around the picture plane. While it is the digital age, in creating the painting, I emphasize the movement of the hand, the arm, the body, the brush and the pen. I am interested in rhythm and breaking the rhythm; deliberation and spontaneity, mood and passion. Colors spill and run together.  Reflections of my memories constantly appear. For example, they sometimes start with my childhood memories of wading in rivers, stones under my bare feet, looking through the water so I could trap minnows and tadpoles with my hands. I think of clouds moving across the sky and the patterns of light filtering through the leaves above my head. The memories and the forms on the canvas to which they relate are evanescent. The resulting images are not literal, but are open to interpretation, capable of depicting something different each time they are viewed. The viewer must make his or her own discovery.  My paintings are like a walk in the woods without a path. It is only subtle signs that show the way out, always toward the light. In many ways, the painting is “not an image but an event.” (Rosenthal on Kline)

ALYSSA PEEK

Alyssa Peek lives in NYC and the Hamptons with her husband she is a portrait and fine art photographer.  Prior to starting Peek Photography, she spent over twenty years working in the fashion industry and left to continue creating beautiful things through the lens of her camera.  Her original work brings a fresh and innovative perspective to traditional photography, always reflecting her love of abstract expressionism and modern art.  Images are either captured abstractly or modified in-camera or post-production where she artistically enhances the ordinary to make it extraordinary.  She works directly with interior designs to create custom sized pieces to fit their individual needs.

LISA PETKER MINTZ

Lisa’s paintings are autobiographical and focus on different places, people and life experiences.  The themes are personal but universal, death, love, divorce, marriage and children dominate the work.  Landscape and sense of place also play a  major role.  The act of picture making is a critical of the journey.  “I need to make beautiful, cohesive, and entertaining paintings.  I paint with the same intensity in which I live my life, but also maintain the naïve view that in today’s chaotic society there are moments in life that can be pure and beautiful.  Life is chaotic; I juggle so many different roles.  My working process is the same.  I juggle many different images and materials.  The process is trial and error until the conclusion is clear”

Thoughts on “giving Tuesday” – and the 15th Anniversary of ReachingU

Today, on so  called “giving Tuesday” I’m compelled to write a short note about ReachingU.  I’ve been lucky enough to have been part of this wonderful team of volunteers for a few years.  They openly give of their time and work tirelessly to open doors and provide opportunities for children and those in need of a hand.

This year’s event marked their 15th anniversary of what grew from an idea to give back and make the world a better place – starting out as a simple garage sale – to what is now a well run influencer supporting a broad swath of causes and contributing to several organizations which are approved after passing strict due diligence measures. The mission is to promote initiatives and strengthen organizations that help Uruguayans living in poverty. We promote initiatives and strengthen organizations that offer educational opportunities so that all Uruguayans living in poverty can develop their full potential.
With a number of member branches that have sprouted over the years, fundraising events held every year worldwide have become increasingly successful over time.  I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend the NY Gala which this year honored famed Uruguayan born architect Rafael Vinoly.   His foundation also  generously contributed to the evening’s fundraising efforts.

As usual, the hours of work behind the scenes from the host chairs, committees and volunteers showed. There were several donors who contributed to the auction, including several other artists.  I had an amazing time fun time made all the better from the chance to attend with friend and colleague Angel Naula, president of Naula Workshops, meet the warm and engaging Vinoly and a chance to chat with the very cool (and gracious) Sebastian Arcelus from House of Cards and Madam Secretary.

But more important than all the fun and glitter, I’m anxious to hear the stories of how the results from the night will make a genuine difference in the lives of so many.   Feel lucky and honored…

Please take a moment to check out their site and all they do by clicking on the logo below.  Thanks!
